Laser Treatment
Laser treatments are performed using a strong, precisely focused beam of light (laser) to treat different conditions in the eye. Laser treatment is needed to improve the vision and to prevent any further loss of vision.
Ophthalmological conditions that use laser as a treatment option are :
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Vitreous floaters
- Retinal vascular diseases
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Ocular membranes
- Retinal breaks and degeneration
- Glaucoma
There are various types of laser treatments available, depending on the ophthalmological condition :
1. PASCAL ( Pattern Scan Laser )
PASCAL (Pattern Scan Laser) is an integrated semi-automatic pattern scan laser photocoagulation system designed to treat various retinal diseases such as:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Retinal vascular occlusion disease – a condition where the blood vessels supplying the retina are occluded
- The system uses short laser beams (20 milliseconds) which is shorter than conventional laser therapy systems.
Studies have determined that the PASCAL system:
- Is effective
- Reduces treatment time
- Increases patient comfort
- Delivers treatment with advanced precision
2. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Laser
This is a cold laser treatment still being used to treat patients with certain wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and central serous choreoretinopathy.
- Uses a light-sensitive medicine called verteporfin (Visudyne®) is injected into the bloodstream.
- When it enters the bloodstream, the drug collects in the abnormal blood vessels of the retina.
- Fifteen minutes after the injection, low powered laser is applied to the area which activates the drug.
- Once activated by the laser beam, the drug creates a reaction that enables it to seal leaking blood vessels.
3. YAG Laser
This is a photo disruptive laser treatment done for patients with thickening of the lens posterior capsule after cataract surgery to improve vision.
- It is a common procedure and safe for patients.
- YAG laser treatment is done by applying a special lens to apply a laser beam to the capsule.
- This creates a small hole in the center of the capsule, letting light through and making vision clear again.
4. Argon Laser
Argon laser is used to treat retinal disease including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
- Uses a special green-wavelength laser.
- By focusing the laser beam precisely, the laser creates heat at specific areas in the retina.
- Used to:
- Reduce swelling of the retina
- Create small scars in the blood vessels in the retina
- Prevent retinal tears from extending
- The treatment is painless.
